Cow* NUMBER ElOttiKEN * - At, ‘ ~ xczcz THE BIRTH OF JESUS Editor's Note: Condensed from Charles L. Allen’s new book, The Life of Christ, copyrighted by Fleming H. Revell Company. Used Dy permission. The birth of Jesus happened in this way. When his mother Mary ■was engaged to be married to | Joseph, before they came togeth er, it was found that she was with child —of the Holy Ghost. An Angel came to her and 'said, “Hail, thou that art highly favou red! The Lord is with thee, bless ed art thou among women." But she was disturbed by what the angel said and did not under stand. And the angel said to her, ‘.‘Pear not Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” Then Mary said to the angel. "How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?" And the angel re plied, "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be bom of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceiv ed a son In her old and this is the sixth month witk her, who was called barren. Par with God nothing shall be impos sible." Mary then said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be It unto me according to thy word." And the Angel departed from her. Before long Mary went to the city of Judah to see Elisabeth. When Elisabeth heard Mary’s hello, her own baby leaped with in her. She felt the Spirit of God and with a loud voice said, "Bless ed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lor as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded In mine ears, the babe leaped In my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed* for there shall be a performance of these things which were told her from the Lord.” Mary then said: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath re garded the low estate of ' is hand maiden: For, behold, from hence forth all generation shall call me blessed." At this time Caesar Augustus sent put, ft decree that everyone should be registered. This hap pened when Cyrenius was gover nor of Syria. Everyone went to his own city to register. Because Joseph was a descendent of David, he went to Bethlehem in Judea to register, together with his wife, Mary, who was expecting a child. While they were there It came time for her baby to be bom, and she gave birth to her first son. She wrapped him up and laid him In a manger, because there was net room for them in the inn. Nearby there were shepherds out in the field watching oyer their sheep during the night. An argel appeared before them, the light of God began to shine all around them, and they were very much afraid. The angel said /to them, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
